I'm not sure exactly what I should call these posts about Zelazny books. Today, I'll cover Creatures of Light & Darkness. Creatures of Light and Darkness. Overall, Roger Zelazny is my favorite SF author, on the strength of his short stories, Isle of the Dead, Call Me Conrad, and Creatures of Light and Darkness. Based on what I've read, Roger Zelazny wrote this book for his own pleasure, and later Samuel R. Lord of Light, to me, isn't in the same league. (reviewed within a month of purchase). Delany persuaded him to publish it. On that basis, his best books - for me, yes, Lord of Light, which is very comic-book, and Creatures of Light and Darkness, despite the blatant metaphor dripping from every pore - are highly entertaining (and readable). Despite routine references to crazy powers and an epic light versus dark struggle, Beautiful Creatures is a bland film experience that is surprisingly devoid of actual movie magic.
