Chilean author Roberto Bolano posthumously won the National Book Critics Circle award Thursday night for the English translation of his 912-page novel 2666. He completed its first draft shortly before his death in 2004. According to his heirs, Roberto Bolaño left instructions that his final work, 2666, should be published as five separate novels, each corresponding to one of the sections of the book as it appears today. More than a month ago I began reading Roberto Bolaño's 2666, I suppose on a lark. Since Bolaño's mind tends to work most powerfully in self-contained bursts (anecdotes, images, monologues) rather than in narrative continuity, skipping around is far less of a ño-ño than it would be in a traditional novel. Every book that isn't a masterpiece is cannon fodder, a slogging foot soldier, a piece to be sacrificed, since in multiple ways it mimics the design of the masterpiece. While I certainly don't take everything he says or writes as gospel, his distaste of Bolaño sours my enjoyment of the novel. 2666.jpg Roberto Bolano's novel 2666 is a turbulent structure. As I was reading the passage in Bolaño's novel 2666 on page 40 through 41 I was reminded of the article from the New York Times we read last week entitled, “Analyzing Literature and Words by Numbers”. Now, I like big books, but only big books that I like. Either there are going to be a lot more posts on this one, or hardly any.
